Before we get into tactics, let’s explain what watch time means. It is also important to know how YouTube sums these hours for monetization.

Watch time is the cumulative duration that individuals spend watching a video. Each YouTube video has a watch time count, which contributes to your channel's overall count.

For your watch time to count toward monetization, you must gain 4,000 hours of video views in 12 consecutive months. The videos don't have to be published in the last 12 months, as long as viewers watched them over the previous year. To put it in perspective, 4,000 watch hours equals 

 of viewing. Every minute contributes to your monetization goal.

Do all watch hours count toward the 4,000-hour goal?

Watch Hours That Won't Count Toward Monetization

 Only public videos count toward the 4,000-hour requirement. If a video is set to private or unlisted, those hours won't move you closer to monetization. To fix it, go to YouTube Studio > Content, find the video, click the visibility icon, and set it to Public.

 When you delete a video, YouTube deducts its watch hours from your total. If your channel has 2,000 hours and you delete a video that earned 500 of them, you're back to 1,500. Before deleting anything, check its watch time in YouTube Analytics first.

 Live streams are one of the best ways to build watch time fast, but there's a catch. If your live stream ends and gets set to private or unlisted, those hours won't count. Once a stream ends, check its visibility in YouTube Studio and make sure it's set to public.

 Shorts views contribute to your overall channel watch time but don't count toward the 4,000-hour threshold. For monetization through ads, your hours need to come from long-form videos and live streams.

Can You Hack Your Way to 4,000 Watch Hours?

Let's be real: creators search for "watch time hacks" because 4,000 hours feels like a mountain. But most so-called hacks fall into two categories: things that get your channel penalized, and legitimate strategies that just aren't marketed as "hacks."

Watch time exchange groups, looped background videos, and third-party services selling watch hours all violate YouTube's Terms of Service. YouTube detects unnatural viewing patterns and removes these hours, and in serious cases may penalize your channel.

 A 4-hour charity stream with 50 viewers generates 200 watch hours in a single session. This is the closest thing to a legitimate hack.

 Organize your best content into themed playlists of 8-12 videos. When one ends, the next auto-plays, compounding watch time without any extra effort from you.

 Publish 10-15 search-optimized tutorials that each pull 5-10 watch hours per day. Over a month, that is 1,500-3,000 hours on autopilot.

 Aim for 8-15 minutes on your core content. Long enough to accumulate meaningful watch time, short enough to maintain strong retention.

The bottom line: there is no shortcut around creating content people want to watch. But there are smart ways to multiply the watch time you are already earning.

Jakes says you need three elements to be successful: Curiosity, fear, and desire.

Curiosity drives clicks more than any other emotion, Jake says. But how do you awaken this feeling in YouTube viewers?

For example, there's a viral push-up challenge on

Why does this work? It blends two power phrases from Jake's list: "

Simply asking the question makes you want to watch the video.

As humans, we're wired to avoid pain and suffering. That's why we have an emotional response to anything that feels threatening. We sweat, engage in fight-or-flight behaviors, and do other impulsive things in the heat of the moment.

Clicking on a YouTube video can be impulsive too. If you see a video about something important in your life ⁠— but there's terrible news involved ⁠— how fast will you watch the video to learn more? Our guess: lightning fast.

 know how to evoke such fear. They'll write nerve-wracking YouTube titles like "The Largest Housing Crash Is Coming" or "Why I Stopped Buying Stocks." In fact, the stocks video drove so much fear that it got over 300,000 views.

If you look even closer, there are more reasons someone would watch that video:

It suggests people will lose money (a common fear).

"Is my money safe in the stock market?" "Should I stop investing like Graham did?" These are questions anyone would ask after reading Graham's video title. But watching the video is the only way to get answers.

Lastly, write titles that capture a basic human desire. Depending on your channel's focus, that could be money, success, companionship, tasty food, well-being, power, or travel experiences. People have many desires, so this is where 

 and how your viewers think comes in handy.

Let's look at the companionship example, specifically dating and relationships. These videos are popular on YouTube because many people have a desire to be partnered. Last year, 

 used this concept to write an enticing video title: "Still Single? This Is What You're Doing Wrong."

Naming YouTube videos can be difficult, but it gets easier when you know a few title-writing tricks.

3 Secrets for Writing Click-Worthy YouTube Titles

Most creators know the importance of a strong thumbnail for long-form content. But what about YouTube Shorts?

It’s easy to assume thumbnails don’t matter for Shorts, especially when they don’t appear in the Shorts feed. But that assumption can cost you views. In reality, a custom thumbnail can drive more clicks outside the Shorts player including: on search pages, your channel tab, or even the YouTube homepage.

If you’re not adding thumbnails to your Shorts yet, you’re missing a key opportunity to grow.

However, YouTube has not introduced any tool or feature to create custom thumbnails. In fact the YouTube team revealed that they have no plans for custom thumbnails for the rest of 2025 either. 

 that we conducted asking if creators would like custom thumbnails on YouTube Shorts, 33,000 voters made their choice clear. 

Take one look at the YouTube Shorts player, and you’ll notice thumbnails don’t appear in that part of the app. Instead, viewers see a random frame from the video, which could be anything — an awkward hand gesture, a transition moment, or a non-essential character from the video. Without a custom thumbnail, there’s no guarantee YouTube will choose the best frame for your content.

And that makes sense, considering how YouTube designed the Shorts player. It was made for endless swiping and not necessarily the browsing features we see on the YouTube homepage. Most social media creators look at the Shorts player and say, “I don’t need thumbnails here.” And they’re right.

Thumbnails Are Important Outside the Shorts Player

But while thumbnails don’t appear on the Shorts player, they 

 show up in other areas of the app and website, including:

There are two ways to give your Short a recognizable thumbnail on YouTube. 

The first option is to set a specific frame as your video’s thumbnail during the upload process. It’s not the 

 solution, especially if your video doesn’t have an engaging frame to catch viewers' attention. But it’s quick, efficient, and gets the job done.

Option 2: Create a Custom Thumbnail Frame

The second option is to create a thumbnail ahead of time using a tool like Canva or Photoshop, then add the graphic to your video as a new frame. You’ll have to do this in an editing program, such as Adobe Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro. But the extra step allows you to set the new frame as your video’s thumbnail when uploading to YouTube.

Here’s how to select a thumbnail for your Short:

1. Upload the Short as you normally would. When you reach the details screen,

As stated earlier, YouTube hasn't made this process any easier from their end yet. The rationale provided by YouTube is that 

the majority of views and watch time for Shorts come from the Shorts feed, where thumbnails are not displayed.

In our channel's experience, this information doesn't hold true. While a mere 13% of our views come from the Shorts shelf, most are from YouTube Search, where thumbnails are prominently shown. 

YouTube has decided to partially address this issue with a recent update that was covered by our in-house expert Rob. Creators will now be able to edit text, color, and also add emojis on their Shorts thumbnails after the Short has been uploaded.

Can You Change the Thumbnail for a YouTube Short?

You can’t change the thumbnail for a Short from your desktop once it’s posted. YouTube hasn’t explained why, but you can instead change the said thumbnail from your mobile app seamlessly. Choose from one of the frames in your Short and use it as your thumbnail.

To change the thumbnail on a given Short:
