How Teachers Can Use Their Skills to Build a YouTube Channel: Full Transcript

Liron Segev:	So Gabby, for people who don't know, what do you do on your channel? How would you describe it in a tweet?

Gabby Wallace:	Go Natural English helps non-native English speakers to speak and communicate in English fluently and confidently.

Liron Segev:	You're literally the first person I think was able to do it in a tweet.

Gabby Wallace:	Because I say that tweetable all the time, try to explain what I do. So yeah, hopefully that's clear.

Liron Segev:	That's nice and concise, and you know exactly what you're doing. You already know that you're communicating your message clearly.

Gabby Wallace:	And I like to say it in terms of what do I help people do, not what I do because I love it. Because I do love it, but it's to help other people.

Liron Segev:	Perfect. And how often would you say that you currently upload on your channel? How many subscribers have you got? Just to kind of get a mental picture, because again, this is something very different that's not your typical vlogger or your typical something that you would expect on YouTube.

Gabby Wallace:	Right now I'm uploading 1.5 times a week, and it's been once a week for the last two years, three times a week a few years ago, and then before that it was a bit sporadic. And right now after eight years of YouTubing at Go Natural English it is at 1.6 million subscribers.

Liron Segev:	Beautiful. So, did you hear that, that overnight success didn't happen overnight?	It has been a long, long mission.

Gabby Wallace:	But it's interesting because it is like a snowball. When you gather momentum it does get easier. Sometimes people ask me, does it get easier after 100,000 subscribers? And I believe it does as long as you're keeping up with what people want to watch, because my channel has kind of doubled in size or roughly speaking for the last three years or so.

Liron Segev:	Well, yeah, I think that once you start figuring out what you want to convey to your audience, you start figuring out what your audience wants from you, you're then you're not all over the place. You're very specific, very focused.

So Gabby, if people are kind of thinking, look, I'm in the education space, which is where you fit in, and a lot of people that I've spoken to, they're saying, look, it's not sexy, it's not cool, it's not the hip thing, it's not Red Bull, right? Is there a place for education on YouTube?

Gabby Wallace:	Absolutely. And I've heard, I've seen, I've experienced that YouTube wants to support educators and educational channels, tutorials, how to's, anything that is informational. I mean, look at some of the huge science channels or the informational, I can't think of any names right now of course, but some of these channels are just huge because people have curiosity.

They want to know why, why do things happen, or what's inside things, or how do you build things. But with language and English, and the arts as well, there's so much curiosity, and many, many people love to be lifelong learners, and many, many people have to learn for work or for school, and so they go to YouTube as a resource.

Liron Segev:	And then where do you find that your audience is coming from? Are they already kind of English speaking to a point? Are they based in the U.S., which is an English speaking country?

Gabby Wallace:	Yeah. Well, English language is something that is global. So I do have viewers from all over the world. It's quite interesting. But the majority of my viewers are actually in the United States from other countries. So they've arrived in the U.S. and still looking to improve their English language skills.

Liron Segev:	Okay. Wow, that's interesting because you would expect that people who are living abroad perhaps and they want to kind of improve their language skills, that make sense?

Liron Segev:	All right. And then is it male, female skewed? What would you think?

Gabby Wallace:	On YouTube, it's interesting because I do have more of a skew toward male viewers, but on my website where I have a blog, same name, Go Natural English, it is more females. So I don't know what's going on there. Just more men are on YouTube and more women are surfing the web. I'm not sure. But it's interesting to see that.

Liron Segev:	And are you finding that you're being discovered by new people because of word of mouth or because of maybe Google searches?

Gabby Wallace:	I think it's definitely a mix. After eight years there's certainly word of mouth, but I think there's also that momentum that comes from having a bunch of content on YouTube, from being online on my website for so many years, building up the search engine optimization and whatnot. Building up that content.

And not to say that it's too late to start, because people hear the, oh, eight years, well great, I'll just go ahead and do my channel for eight years and hope for the best. It doesn't have to take eight years. I think if I had known then what I know now, it's very possible to create a channel, create a presence and build much, much faster.

Liron Segev:	You think it's easier now because technology has changed and has evolved?

Gabby Wallace:	Yes. So it's easier now because we have so much access, like an iPhone or any kind of smartphone you can record with. Eight years ago, not so much. It's easier now because we have conferences and websites, and channels and vidIQ, things that help you that we didn't have eight years ago. But, on the flip side, there's more competition perhaps. But you can't get bogged down by that. You really can't. It's your mindset matters a lot here.

Liron Segev:	Okay. So let's unpack that a little bit. So, tell me about your process. So you have an idea for a video, then what happens?

Gabby Wallace:	I have an idea. So usually my ideas, first of all come from real-life questions or problems that English learners ask of me, or that I see that they're having or hear that they're having. And from there, I do of course think about, is it going to maybe be a popular topic? So is it something that someone would want to click on? Is it something that would spark their curiosity? Is it something that's maybe a little different than what's been done a hundred times before? Although, it is also good to take a look at what has been done and what has been successful to get an idea of what people do click on and want to watch.

So my process is, first of all, before I even look at anyone else's content, before I see what other people have done on the topic, I write down my own thoughts because I don't want to lose those. So, as someone with lots of years of experience teaching English, I do have some ideas.

And if you're listening, if you're a content creator, if you're a teacher, if you're a tutor, if you have some expertise in a topic, write down your own ideas first before you go look and see what other people have done. Because I find when I look at other people's videos, then I'm comparing myself and I start thinking, oh, well maybe I should do it just like they did it. But no, we should not. You have to keep your own ideas first and foremost.

So that is really kind of my process, is to jot down my own ideas first, then take a look at what other people have done to see if maybe I could improve on it, or somehow maybe relate to that or talk about it somehow, and then put it all together into a script or talking points for my video.

Liron Segev:	So it's your own content, it's the way that you're going to bring it across, and that's what your audience are going to respond to.

Gabby Wallace:	And here's the thing about English or any academic subject, it's all been taught before, it's just that you need to put your own spin on it, your own experience, even your own opinion or your own kind of synthesis of your experience, the topic and helping a specific niche of people.

Maybe I might be helping business people from Japan who are advanced English speakers, and maybe you're going to start a channel that's helping beginner people from Mexico, beginner English speakers from Mexico who want to attend Harvard business school.

Liron Segev:	So don't be put off by the fact that it was done before. Bring your own spin to it, make it your own, find your own voice and then connect with an audience, because there's going to be an audience for you.

So if somebody kind of thinking, look, there's no money in this right now. You can't make brand deals out of these things. Would they be right, wrong?

Gabby Wallace:	Yes. So with educational channels, I think a very smart way to monetize is actually to have your own course. But let's go back to brand deals and sponsors, because there are of course many, many products and services related to learning. And so, if you can find a product or service that is related to your topic, that's an obvious fit.

Or take another step out, people need notepads, and pens and whatever you study with. Adjacent products that you could probably promote or sell on your channel. And so, there are many things related to learning. There's just, I mean you have to be a bit creative, but I think it's almost more obvious than if I had an entertainment channel, it's like, okay, well what am I going to promote here? But if you have a subject you're teaching, I think it's almost more obvious and a stronger pull.

Liron Segev:	Well, and the beautiful thing is that, guess what, these companies who sell the stuff, they need an outlet, they need an audience. If you're the one providing that audience, you can make some amazing grand deals.

Gabby Wallace:	There's also lots of companies that offer tutoring in different topics, and so either you could offer tutoring yourself or you could promote a company that does. So I think there's so many options for educators.

Liron Segev:	Absolutely. Become an affiliate for them. Get a referral commission for doing that. Sell stuff on Amazon that you speak about in your video. Have a link and a description to all that. So there's lots of money to be made. Don't believe the press.

Gabby Wallace:	Well, and I really want educators to do well because teachers don't make much money traditionally. And so, I think there's so much opportunity online, on YouTube especially. And so I just, I really want to empower teachers to do well and to enjoy what you're doing, because we teach because we're passionate about our subjects and helping students. And I think that teachers deserve to make money too.

Liron Segev:	Couldn't agree with you more. Absolutely 100%. And we speaking here about a language skill, but education is across lots of different industries, lots of different topics. If you have a skill that you can teach somebody else, that is the education path. Find a way to bring a voice, bring it online, and you can also get 1.6 million followers if you do the work. But you've got to put in the effort, right?

Gabby Wallace:	Yes. It is not for the fainthearted. Not at all. And I've had to grow a bit of a thick skin as well because it's not always easy. I won't go into the negative things. There's not many negative things. But for someone who's a bit sensitive, you might have to grow a thick skin.

Liron Segev:	But I think lots of teachers do have already a thick skin. They’ve got to put up with our kids in school.

Gabby Wallace:	But it's so rewarding. I mean, I received messages from English learners from all over the world, and it just, it warms my heart hearing from someone, they say, hi Gabby, I'm living in Afghanistan, and I'm watching your videos, and it's helping me so much. And it's like, wow, I can't even imagine what life is like over there.

Gabby Wallace:	Yes. Oh, it's magical. It really is.

How Teachers Can Use Their Skills to Build a YouTube Channel: TubeTalk 188 with Gabby Wallace

If you are a creator, you should be aware of the changes made by YouTube around COPPA (see our ‘

11 Things You Need to Know About COPPA and Kid's Content on YouTube TODAY

Under the law, websites are restricted from collecting personal information from users aged under 13. Now at this point, you might be thinking, I make videos from the UK or elsewhere, why does this affect me? Well, YouTube is a US company and anyone in the world can watch YouTube content so it affects that privacy policy, and it affects you.

, YouTube was given time to get their house in order to protect children in the future, and now those changes are in full effect.

Essentially if you are a video creator on YouTube, this is a brand new term that you have to get used to - ‘Made for Kids.’ YouTube is enforcing much stricter rules and placing the onus on you to communicate to your audience whether that content is appropriate for children.

‘Made For Kids?’ - New Settings on YouTube

If you haven't already updated your settings around the new policy, now is the time to do it:

Go to the new Creator Studio and on the left-hand side, click on settings.

Then go to the Channel section, followed by the Advanced Settings tab. This is the new channel audience setting which tells YouTube whether all of your content is made for kids, none of your content is made for kids or some of your content is made for kids.

If you select yes, you will see a brief description of how this impacts your channel which we will cover in a moment. Consider this your master setting that affects all of the content on your channel. This setting will affect all current videos on your channel and all future content on your channel.

And this is not an opt-in choice, no matter where you are in the world as a video creator, you need to check this setting and determine whether or not your content is made for kids, or not. As stated on the setting, regardless of your location, you're legally required to comply with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act and all of the laws.

Now obviously not all of your content may fall into one bucket, so you can adjust audience settings for videos on an individual basis by:

Going to the Video Manager page, and checking ‘Videos’

Click on the edit button and then go to ‘Audience’

From this screen, you'll simply be asked whether the videos checked are made for kids or not.

Also, when you upload a video, you'll be asked this question and depending on how you've answered it on your channel settings, that default will be used and you can change it if you wish.

So you can't dodge the question. It's going be coming up on your channel settings and on individual videos. You must answer whether or not the content is made for kids. And if you're going to try and cheat the system and lie, YouTube have machine learning in place trying to detect whether or not your content is made for kids.

YouTube & ‘Made for Kids’ Content: Penalties for Creators

Now given YouTube's history, unfortunately, mistakes are likely to be made with the content being mislabeled as one or the other. The question for you is, if you do fall into the wrong categorization, what potential penalties are there for you as the individual video creator?

They're, potentially, quite harsh. The maximum civil penalty that the FTC may enforce for each breach could be 

. So in a worst-case scenario, all it would take it is 24 videos to be mislabeled on your YouTube channel to wrack up a fine of over $1,000,000.

Now there is quite a bit to unpack from that huge number. Are the FTC going to fine every single video creator that amount of money if they misrepresent their content on YouTube? And given that there are hundreds of hours of content uploaded onto YouTube every single minute, how is that going to be policed?

And to be honest, I don't think any of us have the answers to those questions right now. What everybody is saying to you right now is to air on the side of extreme caution. Make sure that your content is correctly labeled and you think about the content when you're making it as to whether or not it is appropriate for kids.

The next big question to consider is, what is kid's content? Well, these are seven things you should consider:

Whether children are your intended audience for the video.

Whether the video includes child actors or models.

Whether the video includes characters, celebrities or toys that appeal to children including animated characters or cartoon figures.

Whether the language of the video is intended for children to understand.

Whether the video includes activities that appeal to children.

And whether the video includes songs, stories or poems that appeal to children.

Now I will appreciate that every single video on YouTube will garner a slightly different answer to all of those questions. And some are more clear cut than others. Baby Shark for example, yeah that's pretty much designed for children. But a full night montage of comical moments, that's a little bit more of a gray area and, unfortunately again, we don't have the answers.

The other frustration for video creators is that YouTube doesn’t necessarily have the answers either. When no longer in the realm of YouTube community guidelines, their rules, we're now into law and YouTube has stated that:

Ultimately we can't provide legal advice. So we're unable to confirm whether or not your content is made for kids. That decision is up to you taking into consideration these factors. But we want to help you follow the law as much as we can. Check out our help center and talk to a lawyer if you're still unsure whether or not your content should be marked as made for kids.

There are two things there that essentially cover YouTube's butt. In order to avoid, another $180,000,000 fine, they're making sure that you, the individual video creator, are responsible for telling your audience who that content is appropriate for.

And second of all, YouTube is not going to determine whether or not content is kids' content. If it got to that point, it would be for the law to decide. And that's why YouTube, along with everybody else who's covering this topic, is suggesting you seek legal counsel, if required. And for many of you, that's probably going be unrealistic but we have to say that.

Now, so far we've talked about the potential impact if you miscategorize your content on YouTube. However, if you tell YouTube that your videos are for kids, you also lose a significant number of YouTube features. All of these features are rooted in the collection of personal data which is exactly what YouTube need to avoid with viewers under the age of 13. And I know that for many of you video creators, this is a huge blow. It essentially means that you can't directly engage with your community because you don't know anything about them.

What if Your Content is Mislabelled as ‘Made for Kids’ on YouTube?

So far we've focused on channels that will be impacted by these changes, channels that do make content for children. But what about all of those other channels that shouldn't be affected because they don't create content for under thirteens. What if YouTube makes a mistake and it categorizes that content as made for kids? Is there any way they can appeal against that? Well, kind of.

If YouTube determines a video is made for kids you can send feedback. But what does send feedback mean? Does that constitute an appeal? And can you get YouTube to actually change the decision, once made? I think it's safe to say that while this is everything we currently know about YouTube's changes due to FTC and COPPA, we don't have enough real world examples of how this is going to impact channels.

So, whether YouTube will be able to change on appeal or what type of penalties you may get, those answers are still up in the air. What we will continue to do here at VidIQ is monitor the situation and give you all of the information as soon as we have it.

COPPA, FTC and Your YouTube Channel - Everything You Need To Know!

As you might have guessed, the theme of this post is the one-two punch YouTube is hitting us all with as we slide into 2020; the FTC ruling on COPPA violations, and YouTube’s Terms of Service changes.

FTC and COPPA and you making sure that your content is clearly labeled as made for kids or not

, YouTube has little control over this because they have to comply with the law.

However, when it comes to YouTube's own rules such as community guidelines and Terms of Service, they have complete control and they're changing the terms of service which is causing a lot of video creators to absolutely lose their minds again.

. If you read for long enough, you'll come across this section:

Terminations by YouTube for service changes.

 YouTube may terminate your access, or your Google account's access to all or parts of the service if YouTube believes, in its sole discretion, that provision of the service to you is no longer commercially viable.

Now, when you read that passage in isolation, as a video creator, how do you interpret those words? I think there is only one natural conclusion that everybody comes to. If my videos can't generate money for YouTube, potentially YouTube could cut me off the service, and to be fair, given everything else that's going on right now, that is a reasonable assumption.

This sounds like a double whammy for kids’ content channels because the FTC and COPPA rulings mean that those channels can't use targeted ads. So they are going to generate a lot less income for both themselves and YouTube. So if those channels are a lot less commercially viable, why is YouTube going support those kids’ channels?

A lot of YouTuber’s are panicking because their channel is small or their earnings are low or even nonexistent, and YouTube may terminate their channel come December the 10th when these new terms of service come into play. Here's team YouTube's consistent response to all of these queries:

To clarify, the commercially viable section is not about terminating accounts because it's not making money. It's about discontinuing certain features or parts of the service because they are outdated or have low usage. This does not impact creators or viewers in new ways. So thanks for clarifying that, YouTube - on Twitter. It would have been helpful if you’d have made that clear in the TOS to begin with though.

Given YouTube's explanation on Twitter, this is how I interpret that particular Term of Service. Remember YouTube annotations? Maybe you do, maybe you don't. Now, I seem to remember that YouTube said they removed annotations because they couldn't be used on mobile devices, and info cards and end screens did a more adequate job. That’s an example of an outdated piece of software on the platform, not commercially viable, removed from the YouTube service.

Now, annotations themselves never generated revenue for you or YouTube, but thinking five or 10 years down the line, what about 

? They're a big thing right now, and a lot of channels earn a lot of income from them, but in the future, it might not be commercially viable for YouTube to continue to support this feature.

So what if they remove it? Well, if that Term of Service wasn't there you might be able to legitimately argue to YouTube hey, this is worth 80% of my income on YouTube and you've just taken that away from me without any ruling on why you should do that. Well, that's why that TOS potentially is there. So to summarize that particular part of the new Terms of Service:

__It's not about your channel not being commercially viable for YouTube, it's the tools and services that YouTube provides you not being commercially viable anymore. __

Generally speaking, it wouldn't make sense for YouTube to terminate channels that don't create revenue for the platform because many channels create goodwill for the platform.

Take #TeamTrees, a perfect example of people uniting on YouTube for the greater good. I sincerely hope that the majority of video creators making content about #TeamTrees are not trying to jump on the trend to earn a bit of AdSense revenue, but are joining a cause to raise $20,000,000 to plant 20,000,000 trees. As a fundraiser, this is about raising money to do something serious and good in the world, and YouTube is a platform that allows us to do that. YouTube themselves have even pledged money towards that fundraiser, so strictly speaking, that's not commercially viable because they're losing money from it.

You could argue that supporting fundraisers is commercially viable because it puts YouTube in a great light, but that’s a pretty cynical point of view. Also, think about the channels and videos that never monetize their content either because they don't want to or they don't have the chance, but they still contribute to the YouTube ecosystem. Those videos are suggesting other videos that maybe have advertisements running on them, and YouTube states that the ad revenue stream and the search and discovery algorithm are not connected so it doesn't matter whether or not you monetize your content.

If your videos are being watched, they are valuable to YouTube. And if YouTube decides that they do want to remove all of these channels that are never going to make a dime for the company, then YouTube I think at this point has lost its soul. Another way of thinking about this is that YouTube could remove those features that they don't consider commercially viable to provide for free.

 or YouTube Stories. Instead, creators pay a premium, say $5 a month, to use these tools so that YouTube is guaranteed to earn income from them and it makes them more commercially viable. Again, right now I'm spitballing, and none of this is likely to ever happen, but I'm trying to interpret this Term of Service in a way that doesn't make you think that YouTube is going to get rid of your channel because you don't make any money from YouTube.

is one of the worst offenders on YouTube for not being commercially viable because we have over 400,000 subscribers, and this year, we've got 20,000,000 views, and yet we've not earned a single dime for YouTube or ourselves through ad revenue because we've chosen not to monetize our content. We want to make an impact on the people watching our content, the audience.

We want them to be educated and inspired to make their own content on YouTube. We are complete advocates of the platform, and it just so happens that we have a tool that you can download to help grow your channel and it's available off of YouTube. So yeah, does YouTube really want to get rid of us as a channel? I would sincerely hope not.

I would like to think that our channel and the tools that we provide have assisted millions of video creators to create a countless number of videos that have generated billions of views for YouTube, and if that's somewhere close to the legacy that we leave on YouTube if we're not commercially viable, you know what? I think we'll take that.

Three Reasons Why YouTube WILL Terminate Your Channel

Now, having said all of that about one particular part of the new Terms of Service on YouTube, there are a few other parts that raise a quizzical eyebrow. YouTube may suspend or terminate your access, your Google account, or your Google account's access to all or part of the service if:

You materially or repeatedly breach their agreement,

YouTube is are required to do so to comply with a legal requirement or a court order,

YouTube reasonably believes there has been conduct that creates liability or harm to any user, other third party, YouTube, or their affiliates.

If you break any of the rules on YouTube from their Terms of Service, they can take you off the platform or if YouTube feels that you harm the service, the users, or anyone involved in YouTube, they can do exactly the same thing. I think the basic principle of all of this comes down to one simple sentence in the entirety of the Terms of Service:

> Content is the responsibility of the person or entity that provides it to the service.

YouTube is under no obligation to host or serve content. Remember this, YouTube is rented ground that you get for free. It allows you to broadcast your video content to a global audience with an Internet connection and a camera. YouTube covers all of the costs, and they give you back some of the money when you are collaboratively able to earn it. But they are both gatekeeper and keymaster. If they want to change the locks, they are welcome to do so.

Now, it's up to us whether or not we want to continue to use the service. Remember, we are not obligated to put our content onto YouTube. We can take it to Instagram, Twitter, Twitch or elsewhere. So there is a fine balance here and YouTube is really struggling to try and find that balance that works for both them and us, but that's where we stand.
