TL;DR: Check YouTube Studio’s Feature eligibility tab to see what your channel can use. Phone verification enables intermediate tools; advanced access also needs channel history or an offered identity check. Individual tools and monetization can have additional requirements.

To unlock YouTube features, open YouTube Studio → Settings → Channel → Feature eligibility, then complete the verification shown for the access level you need. Phone verification unlocks intermediate features; advanced access also requires sufficient channel history or an available ID or video verification option.

Subscriber milestones do not unlock everything. A channel can upload a custom thumbnail yet still lack permission to pin a comment, and access to creator tools does not automatically qualify it to earn money.

Where do you check your YouTube feature eligibility?

Check Settings → Channel → Feature eligibility in the desktop version of YouTube Studio. The tab shows your access levels and the verification steps still available to your channel.

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio and select the channel you want to manage.
  2. Open Settings in the left menu.
  3. Select Channel, then Feature eligibility.
  4. Expand a level to see its requirements. Enabled means you have access to that level.

Check the selected channel before troubleshooting. If you manage several channels, verification on one is not a reason to assume every other channel has the same access.

Does Eligible mean a feature is enabled?

Eligible is not the same status as Enabled. Open the relevant tier to check its requirements rather than assuming that Eligible means the tool is ready to use.

YouTube's feature-access guide also notes that some tools have separate requirements outside this tab. Use the table below to identify the right starting point, then check any restriction shown by the individual tool.

What do standard, intermediate and advanced features unlock?

Standard access comes with channel creation, intermediate access adds phone verification, and advanced access adds sufficient channel history or an offered identity check. The examples below identify the relevant tier; individual tools can still have additional requirements.

Access level

How you qualify

Examples of access

Standard

Create a channel with no active Community Guidelines strikes

Upload videos, create playlists and use Posts, subject to applicable restrictions and daily limits

Intermediate

Verify a phone number

Upload videos longer than 15 minutes, use custom thumbnails and livestream on a computer

Advanced

Complete phone verification, then establish sufficient channel history or use an offered ID or video verification method

Pin comments, use clickable links in long-form descriptions and posts, appeal Content ID claims, and receive higher daily limits for certain tools

Higher limits do not mean unlimited use. YouTube can restrict individual features or daily activity, and a channel must continue following its policies after verification.

For example, YouTube places custom thumbnails in the intermediate tier and pinned comments in advanced access. If your thumbnail upload works but comment pinning does not, check the advanced row rather than repeating phone verification.

How do you verify your phone number on YouTube?

Expand Intermediate features and select VERIFY PHONE NUMBER. Choose the text-message or voice-call option, enter your number, and submit the verification code you receive.

YouTube's phone-verification instructions identify videos longer than 15 minutes as one reason to complete this step. If you are uploading a 20-minute tutorial, check intermediate access before cutting the video down simply to fit an unverified account's limit.

If the code does not arrive, try the other delivery method offered on the screen. Some carriers or countries do not support Google's messages or calls. YouTube also limits a phone number to verifying two channels per year, so a number that has reached that limit will not verify another channel.

After verification, return to the task you were trying to complete. Our custom-thumbnail setup guide covers uploading the image itself; verifying a phone number and adding a thumbnail are separate steps.

How do you unlock advanced features on YouTube?

Advanced access requires phone verification plus sufficient channel history or an ID or video verification option offered to your account. In Feature eligibility, expand Advanced features and select ACCESS FEATURES to see your available routes.

Build sufficient channel history

You do not have to submit an ID if you qualify through channel history. YouTube considers activity such as uploads, livestreams and audience engagement, along with information about the Google Account's creation and use.

There is no published subscriber count or fixed number of uploads that guarantees this approval. Continue using the channel in line with YouTube's policies and check its eligibility status rather than trying to meet an invented posting quota.

Use ID or video verification if it is offered

ID and video verification are not available to every creator. If your account offers one of these routes, follow the link or QR code from Studio and complete the process on a compatible smartphone.

For ID verification, YouTube asks for a supported, valid identity document. Follow its country-specific ID requirements, and make sure the document's date of birth matches your Google Account. For video verification, follow the on-screen face or head-movement prompts.

YouTube says reviews usually take 24 hours. That is a typical review time, not a guarantee that access will appear immediately after submission. Wait for the result instead of submitting repeated attempts.

Use the primary owner's account

Only the primary channel owner can verify identity for this access. Having permission to manage or upload to a channel does not make you its primary owner.

YouTube Help gives a specific diagnostic example: “Advanced YouTube features aren’t available for this account.” If you see that message, check the signed-in account's ownership role. For a Brand Account, the primary owner performs verification, and the other users receive feature access based on that verification status.

These ownership, history and identity rules are detailed in YouTube's intermediate and advanced access instructions.

Why are YouTube features still unavailable?

Use the exact message or restriction to decide what to check next. A missing tool can reflect ownership, review status, policy restrictions or a daily limit rather than an incomplete phone-verification step.

What you see

What to check or do next

No ID or video verification option

The route may not be offered to your account. Use the channel-history route instead.

Identity verification is pending

Wait for the review result and check the email address associated with the account.

Identity verification was rejected

Follow the stated rejection reason before retrying. YouTube requires a 30-day wait after a second unsuccessful attempt; video verification may offer an appeal.

“ID verification doesn’t work with this phone’s camera”

Use a phone with a full HD rear-facing camera to submit your ID. This is a device-compatibility problem, not a subscriber requirement.

“Check your browser”

Update your device's operating system and browser. If another application is using the camera, close it before retrying.

Advanced access disappeared

Check YouTube's restriction notice and your channel history. Strikes, spam, misleading activity or other policy problems can affect access.

A tool says you reached a daily limit

If you already have advanced access, YouTube says to wait 24 hours before using that feature again. Verification does not remove every limit.

A specific tool is missing even though the level is Enabled

Check that tool's own age, country, account, audience or rollout requirements.

These messages and remedies come from YouTube Help's access troubleshooting instructions. Do not treat re-verification as a way around a policy restriction. For channels rebuilding eligibility, YouTube says active channels that consistently follow its guidelines can usually rebuild sufficient history within two months. That statement concerns rebuilding history, not a guaranteed waiting period for every new channel.

Which YouTube features have additional requirements?

Monetization and some individual tools add their own audience, age, country or policy requirements. An Enabled access tier is not a substitute for meeting those conditions.

Is feature access the same as monetization eligibility?

No. Advanced features are one requirement for joining the YouTube Partner Program, but monetization also has its own audience thresholds, supported-country requirements, policy checks and channel review.

In eligible expanded-YPP countries, 500 subscribers can qualify a channel to apply for earlier access to certain fan-funding and Shopping features when it also meets the upload and watch-time or Shorts-view requirements. It is not the subscriber threshold for ad-revenue sharing, and it is not a requirement for every creator tool.

For the full requirements, use our YouTube monetization eligibility guide and the Earn tab in Studio. YouTube's expanded-YPP overview lists the supported countries and additional conditions.

What do you need to livestream on mobile?

Mobile livestreaming requires at least 50 subscribers as well as verification and other conditions; enabling your first stream may take 24 hours. YouTube's general livestreaming rules set a minimum age of 16.

Does advanced access unlock Super Chat?

Fan-funding products, such as Super Chat, also require you to be at least 18 and live where that specific product is available. Advanced access alone does not meet those conditions.

FAQs

Does phone verification give you a YouTube verification badge?

No. Phone verification is an account-access step, not the public checkmark beside a channel's name. YouTube has a separate verification-badge process; completing the phone-code flow does not award a badge.

Can you delete your ID or video verification later?

Yes, but deleting it before you establish sufficient channel history can remove your advanced access. Check your eligibility and YouTube's verification-data deletion instructions before removing it from your Google Account.

Do you need 500 subscribers to use YouTube Posts?

No. YouTube's current feature-access table lists Posts under standard access, not a blanket 500-subscriber unlock. Posts are unavailable to supervised accounts and channels set as Made for Kids. Check YouTube's current Posts restrictions, including country availability, rather than relying on an old Community-tab milestone.

Can you still unlock a custom YouTube URL?

You can no longer create or change a legacy custom URL. Your channel's current address uses its handle instead. Our YouTube handles guide explains how to find and change that identifier.
