Is it possible to get 10,000 subscribers on YouTube in just three months?
If you’re Rachel How, the answer is a swift and confident yes. She’s new to YouTube, but she already has more than 10,000 subscribers – 12,600 to be exact. Her informative videos – of which there are only 16 – help aspiring UI and UX designers launch a promising career.

In this episode of TubeTalk, we ask Rachel how she gained so many subscribers in just 90 days. Her answers might surprise you. As important as keyword research, thumbnails, and video titles are, those things aren’t her first concern. Rachel’s videos come from the heart, and that's what made her channel explode with subscribers.
Are you trying to get your first 10,000 subscribers? Here are five tips to reach that milestone as quickly as possible.
1. Get a YouTube Mentor
No, seriously. If you’re new to YouTube, it helps to follow creators and YouTube educators who’ve been on the platform for years. These seasoned creatives can help you in so many areas, whether that’s making better thumbnails or coming up with video ideas.
You don’t have to know these creators on a personal level. Some of them offer YouTube advice on their channels, or as an extra service to aspiring video makers.
Rachel’s mentor was Matt D'Avella, a minimalist filmmaker. She took one of his courses on YouTube growth to learn the ins and outs of starting a channel.
“To my surprise, the course has been very different from what I expected,” Rachel says. “It was about making great content, ignoring algorithms, and just really focusing on producing quality over quantity.”

Want to film from the heart and attract more subscribers? You can start by:
- Building a channel around something you’re passionate about.
- Focusing on your audience and what they would like to watch.
- Avoiding clickbait to build trust with viewers.
- Thinking about keywords, titles, and everything else once you’ve grasped the concepts above.

2. Solve a Massive Problem to Get 10,000 YouTube Subscribers
Increasing your subscriber count from several hundred viewers to 10,000 isn't easy. Something that impactful takes massive effort. If you’re up for a challenge, you can start by solving a problem plaguing millions of people.
Rachel’s first video achieved that goal and put her on track to gain 10,000 subscribers. “8 Ways to Get Started In UX and Product Design for Free” was her way of closing a content gap on YouTube.
“I kind of designed it like, ‘You know what, nobody has done content on how to get started in UX design for free,’” Rachel says. “When I was starting out [in product design], I was looking for free content – not paid content – because of budget issues. So I noticed there was a gap in that content.”
The video above has 25,000 views, an impressive feat for anyone that's new to YouTube.
Do you have a skill that’s sorely needed on YouTube? If you're passionate about it, create a channel and start filming. Soon you’ll attract thousands of like-minded subscribers.
3. Think Less and Create More
What does it mean to create freely on YouTube and think less about metrics? For Rachel, it’s about enjoying that initial urge to film, and simply getting lost in the feeling. Relishing it. If a video topic speaks to you, and it’s within your niche, don’t be afraid to explore it – even if it seems like you won’t get as many views. You won’t know until you press record and upload the video.
This willingness to experiment and see what works is a critical mindset hack; you'll need it to keep learning and attracting subscribers on YouTube.
4. Make Emotional YouTube Videos
Have you noticed how some videos are dry and unappealing? Rachel’s second YouTube video could have gone in that category, but somehow it didn’t. She talked about becoming a product designer in just three months, and tech videos like these can feel a little flat. But not in Rachel’s case; the video has 128,000 views so far.
Why was the video so successful? We can sum it up in two words: raw emotion.
In the first 10 seconds of the video, you see B-roll of a bustling city as Rachel narrates, “You’re not good enough. You need a degree. Your dreams are too big.”
An aspiring UI or UX designer has probably had those thoughts once or twice. And because of that, she has the viewer’s full attention. Speaking directly to your audience (and their problems), then offering a solution, is a great way to make people subscribe.
“Besides teaching people or sharing what I know, what is something else that could motivate people that I could at least produce?.... I felt like maybe that’s the video that could change someone’s life,” Rachel says.
5. Put Your Viewers First
Want to make sure people subscribe to your YouTube channel? Center the viewing experience around their lives and their expectations.
Here are two things we know about any audience:
- They could potentially be short on time.
- Thanks to the internet, they expect instant entertainment.
Knowing this, it’s easy to design an experience that gives people exactly what they want.
You could always:
- Lay out the points of your video clearly before exploring each one.
- Make your video clips as concise as possible.
- Offer free material that complements the video (downloadable PDF, design templates, etc.)
These little touches of care are designed to make the viewer's life easier.
Getting 10,000 YouTube subscribers is an awesome goal. But it’s OK if you’re not ready to chase that milestone just yet.
