This means your opening line needs to hook viewers immediately while including your primary keyword. Think of it like writing a meta description for SEO. Those first two sentences should answer: "What is this video about, and why should I watch it?"

 On a search page, YouTube shows the first 90 characters of our video description.

But below the video itself, viewers see the first 160 characters.

To optimize your description, write those first 2–3 lines like a hook: promise the outcome, then earn the click.

The YouTube description box holds 5,000 characters, but it's unlikely you'll need that much space, and no viewer wants to read paragraphs of text. After all, they came to watch a video.

That begs the question: What's the ideal YouTube video description length? There isn't an answer that fits all scenarios, but generally keep it under 1,000 characters. Just enough to share:

What viewers need to know about the video

Information related to the video (research you used, downloadable resources, etc.)

Have you ever read a YouTube description that didn't explain the video? It feels off and can turn away potential subscribers.

Chapters make your content skimmable. If your video runs past 10 minutes, timestamps help viewers jump to what matters to them. Format them like this:
