For many users of YouTube - both viewers and creators - the subscriber count for a channel has been a hugely valuable resource for a number of reasons. However, today YouTube announced that from August 2019, it will 

no longer display the exact number of subscribers

 a channel has. In a blog post, the platform confirmed that it will only show abbreviated subscriber numbers publicly across "all public YouTube surfaces" - a decision that will also directly affect third party sites that pull subscriber numbers from the YouTube API. Individual channels will still have full access to their own sub counts via YouTube Studio.

Abbreviated YouTube Subscriber Counts: What Does This Mean?

Going forward, we'll know when either channel hits a new milestone (say 100M subscribers) but unless the two channels have vastly differing subscriber counts going forward, we won't know which one is exactly in the lead.

While exact subscriber numbers fuelled the PewDiePie vs T Series game across the world, monitoring the numbers can also have a detrimental effect on creators caught up in off-platform drama (i.e. James Charles vs Tati Westbrook). While social media can be a difficult space to navigate, the so-called 'Cancel Culture' that affected Charles and Westbrook has been particularly brutal, and the abbreviation of exact subscriber numbers may help curb this particular trend.

YouTube have confirmed that for channels with less than 1,000 subscribers, the exact subscriber count will still be shown. However, once a YouTube channel exceeds 1000 subscribers, it will start to abbreviate those numbers "on a sliding scale."

In other words, if a YouTube channel has 133,017 subscribers, the public subscriber count will read “133K” until the channel reaches 134,000.

The ability to enable comments and notifications will also be removed.

Most importantly, child-focused videos will not be able to monetize via targeted ads, a move that could have a devastating financial impact on hundreds of thousands of YouTube channels.

Kid’s Content on YouTube: The New Rules

#1 You Can Get a Copyright Claim Just By Humming a Copyrighted Tune!

YouTube confirms that for every song or musical composition there are two sets of copyright: one belongs to the songwriter or the songwriting team behind the melody, the ones that wrote the music and created the lyrics.

The second copyright protection is for the artist and covers the recording and performance of that song. If you upload a video that features you, or anyone else, humming along to a copyrighted melody that you haven’t sought permission for you are infringing on that copyright and may receive a copyright takedown for doing so.

#2 Creating a Lyric Video Can Also Attract a Copyright Claim

Adding lyrics over a background image to a licensed song without permission is also a big no. They could be claimed by the music publisher, that’s the entity that usually owns the copyright to a composition. The publisher protects the songwriter and that includes the use of the music or lyrics on YouTube.

#3 How About Just Playing an Instrument Over a Song?

A recognisable version of a melody is usually referred to as a ‘Master Recording,’ and copyright covers that tangible asset. If, as a creator, you use clips from that master without seeking written permission, then you may attract a copyright takedown. This includes using snippets in a remix, or singing or playing an instrument over it.

#4 But I Played All the Instruments Myself!

Creators will often dispute a copyright takedown by arguing that they recreated the song by playing all the instruments themselves, or recorded a new voice track. But if the musical composition was used then the publisher or songwriter has a valid claim.

#5 What Cover Music Can be Claimed by the Rights Holder?

If a video creator uses a song or changes the lyrics in a way that either provides commentary or ridicules the original, there may be an argument for Fair Use. But Fair Use is not a guarantee and depends entirely on how the creator has interpreted the composition. So, parodies can absolutely be subject to claim.

If you are performing a copyrighted song on YouTube, and are in the partner program, the platform has the ability to share revenue between the publisher and the creator who uploaded the video. That’s known as a cover rev share, even though the new version may not necessarily be a straightforward cover. YouTube clearly states that if your video content is aimed towards children, the platform now HAS to start limiting the data it collects on these viewers. It will also remove features including:

Personalized ads (so some creators may see a decrease in revenue).

The ability for viewers to save videos, watch them later, or save to a playlist.
