Coronavirus, COVID-19, whatever you want to call it. How do we tackle such a topic? As a YouTube creator, or a viewer, what does coronavirus mean to you right now?

 rapidly changing news story, and what I say right now may not be relevant or accurate in a day or a week. This is the biggest global news story to hit in this new digital media age, and it is one that is impacting billions of lives. It's affecting everything we know and we have to take this topic very seriously. So, from one creator to another, if you are going to post videos on the coronavirus, please do it responsibly.

Coronavirus: How it Changed Everything in Less Than a Week

In the past few days, we've learned that all of the major North American sports leagues, such as NBA, NHL, MLS, have postponed their seasons to prevent large gatherings of people. Schools are closing everywhere and shops are running low on supplies.

Essentially, in the real, physical world, authorities all over the globe are cautioning their citizens against social interaction, and, as a result, technology, the internet, the connected digital world, is going to be tested like it never has been before.

People are being forced into self-isolation or self-quarantine. And if there's nothing to do outside the four walls of their own house, they are naturally going to gravitate towards the Internet for entertainment, and that includes video.

But that comes with an incredible amount of responsibility, especially on a platform such as YouTube, where creators are sharing their information with an audience hungry for answers.

So, YouTube, Coronavirus, creator, viewer. How does this all work? Well, let's start with this question that I do not want to ask, but YouTube must answer. As a creator, how can I get more views and more subscribers and grow my channel from coronavirus?

As I said earlier, in my opinion, I think this is the largest global event of the digital media age, and unavoidably, this creates opportunity.

Coronavirus didn't even register as a search term at the beginning of 2020. Today, it's seemingly the only thing that's searched for. Typing the word into the YouTube search bar, and into 

 will tell you that it has massive search volume, but content to support that keyword hasn't yet quite caught up. Demand outstrips supply, and when that happens, those who have supply capitalize.

Coronavirus: One of the Most Searched For Keywords on YouTube

Forgive me for a second, but I want you to cast your mind back to a much simpler time where the stakes were a lot less important, but the concept was still the same. 

 that anticipated that this may become one of the biggest YouTube stories of the year, and set up a livestream to follow the subscriber counts. That channel benefited with hundreds of millions of views and 2.5 million subscribers. It's probably not going to surprise you, but there are channels out there who are applying exactly the same formula to the coronavirus.

As I search for the term on YouTube and filter by livestreams only, there is one channel called Roylab Stats that began a livestream on the Coronavirus at the end of January, when the concern and the keyword interest was at a fraction of the size it is today.

Right now, there are over 40,000 people watching the numbers the stats, and the graph trends upwards. This channel had less than 1,000 subscribers at the end of January. It's now growing at a rate of over 5,000 subscribers a day.

From purely an objective point of view, this is YouTube at its finest. A creator has discovered a topic that was going to trend in the future and created content before anyone else. They've pitched it well with SEO, and now, a mass audience is desperate for information on this keyword, so are flocking to this video.

Of course, YouTube is a search engine and a very good one at that. It's always trying to predict what you are searching for, and then serving up the content that you want to watch.

As you well know, when you type words into the YouTube search bar, it will auto-complete with predicted searches. Today, if you type in how to, the top search result is ‘how to make hand sanitizer’, along with some other coronavirus-related searches.

In this sense, YouTube is a self-fulfilling prophecy. If you are worried about Coronavirus, it's in YouTube's search and discovery nature to tell you about it, and once again, YouTube will reward those who seize this trending topic.

Coronavirus, YouTube, & Late Night Content

So, it's fair to say that, currently, Coronavirus is a huge searchable topic on YouTube with channels of all sizes benefiting from it, whether rightly or wrongly. You could argue that we've looked at fairly safe styles of delivery, a factual livestream and an educational video on how to prevent catching Coronavirus. But what about when the lines get a little blurred?

The YouTube Trending Tab has always been a source of controversy, especially for creators who believe that it doesn't reflect what's really trending on the platform, and instead, favors certain channels, chief among those, North American late-night talk shows.

"The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" is one such channel, and a recent clip from his show found its way onto the trending page of YouTube.

The clip itself is a collection of news stories, obviously delivered in a comedic way, and Coronavirus takes up no more than 30 seconds of a five-minute video. But the decision was made by the YouTube channel manager to include Coronavirus both in the title and the video description of this content. They wanted people to find this because of the Coronavirus mention:

I think, at this stage, most people will take this content at face value, as a light-hearted piece of fun, but at the other end of the spectrum, there are people who are being seriously affected by Coronavirus and are searching for information on it.

Now, one thing that should happen at the slightest mention of Coronavirus in a video is that YouTube will display info cards and panels relevant to your location that push you to trusted information, and this video is a test in itself of that process.

This is one of the many measures YouTube is taking to try and stay on the right side of this topic. It is also promoting authoritative sources in search and recommendations and showing information panels on relevant videos.

, which gives you an unfiltered account of videos with the most views over a certain period of time, the majority of the content about Coronavirus seems to be coming from those American late night talk show hosts.

This isn't necessarily a measure of what YouTube is recommending most to viewers, but it does seem to be a useful insight into the psyche of the average YouTube user right now. In these times of great uncertainty, they still want to be entertained.

Update: YouTube is now allowing videos about Coronavirus to be monetized on a limited number of channels

Now, for those creators who are finding, I don't want to say success, more traction on their channel because of Coronavirus content, does that mean they are actually going to profit from it? Well, in this case, I think YouTube have definitely taken the right approach, and that is no.

YouTube already has in place comprehensive advertiser guidelines that state what type of content may have limited ads or no ads at all, and the Coronavirus clearly falls into one of these categories, a global health crisis.

So, if your intention as a creator is to tackle the Coronavirus topic head-on, like we have in this video, you wouldn't expect to monetize your content, and that would be fair, right?

Well, hang on. Remember the video from earlier on, that was all about making homemade hand sanitizer? It was clearly being made with the Coronavirus in mind, but not exclusively about the Coronavirus, and it's not the first how to make hand sanitizer video on YouTube.

Almost four years ago, the WhatsUpMoms channel posted a DIY hand sanitizer video, and for years, that video has trundled along at less than 50 views per hour. But now, in the wake of the Coronavirus outbreak, the video is getting over 1,200 views per hour, and in recent weeks, there are people commenting on how they've arrived at this video.

It is clear that this video has gained traction recently from the Coronavirus outbreak, but (at time of writing) it is missing any YouTube information about the Coronavirus. However, if we visit the 

 that includes the keyword in the title, there you will find Coronavirus info cards from YouTube.

Now, also at time of writing, the WhatsUpMom DIY hand sanitizer video from four years ago still has ads running on it. The other channel is too small to be even in the YouTube Partner Program, so we can't be sure whether this video would be monetized, but I would suspect not, since the Creator Blog does go on to state that YouTube currently does not allow monetization if a video includes more than a passing mention of the Coronavirus.

YouTube does recognize that there may be a need to adjust its policies on this issue. Its 

"It's becoming clear this issue is now an ongoing and important part of everyday conversation, and we want to make sure news organizations and creators can continue producing quality videos in a sustainable way. In the days ahead, we will enable ads for content discussing the Coronavirus on a limited number of channels, including creators who accurately self-certify "and a range of news partners.”

YouTube has policies in place that confirm if there is a global health crisis and you create content on that topic it is going to limit or show no ads on that content. But if that global health crisis goes on for six weeks, and may go on for six months to a year, then, yeah, actually, we think you may have permission to monetize your content, as long as we trust you as creators.

That, again, is putting a lot of responsibility both on YouTube and creators to do the right thing.

YouTube is already well-prepared for self-certification, as it already has mechanisms in place. You will have all seen the 

 requirements crop up on your channel, but what you may not yet have seen are the ad-friendly self-certification screens that YouTube have been trialing for over a year now.

Presumably, YouTube are adapting the self-certifications for Coronavirus content, and we’ll know more in the coming weeks. Clearly, there is a lot to talk about, and by no means are we or YouTube done with this topic.

I see this as a starting point for a conversation about how the Coronavirus is impacting YouTube, especially creators just like you, and I want you to help us guide this conversation.

A huge number of YouTube creators find themselves at home right now, with perhaps a little more time on their hands as they get to avoid the morning commute, or have their lunchtimes to themselves. If you’re an active creator, you’ll know that most of your time is spent in front of the camera, and then editing the footage into something you’re eager to upload.

And while publishing consistent and engaging content is the key to growing views and subscribers, there are also many things you should be doing to keep your channel in the best possible shape. We’ve put together 13 little tasks you can easily do as part of this housekeeping. Just tackling one a day over the next couple of weeks can have a huge impact on your YouTube channel going forward. 13 Easy Ways to Grow Your YouTube Channel

Just devoting some time each day to the following can really improve the experience for your audience. Just pick one and start today!

Your channel page is the home of your YouTube universe that can often be forgotten and neglected once you start creating content. So it's time to revisit, fix, clean and improve it.

Make sure your channel trailer or the video that auto-plays at the top of the page best reflects what you do on your channel. If you don't have a channel trailer and you're not sure what video to use, pick the one that brings in the most subscribers. Viewers trust you with that content, after all, so you might as well use it.

Next up organize your video shelves so that they continue to educate visitors as quickly as possible as to what you do. For instance, on the 

, we have a ‘New to vidIQ’ shelf that touches on our tools but also includes general YouTube tips and tricks, and gaming advice for creators since we know that content is incredibly valuable for a big portion of our audience.

Our next shelf is devoted to our latest uploads so visitors know that we are still creating content and on a very regular basis.

Many creators are great about keeping their playlists updated. But let’s be honest, you may have had really good intentions about keeping your playlists up to date, but have fallen a little behind.

Now's the time to package them all up nicely with neat little bows. Consider whether or not you need 98 videos in a playlist, because let's be honest, who's going to start watching a 98 video playlist. Just find a playlist that only has one or two videos in it and decide whether you're going to add more videos to it or get rid of the playlist.

Remember to write playlist titles as if they were video titles rather than file names. You've got to give a reason for viewers to click on those playlists too.

#3 Complete Your ‘About’ Section in Full

Reread and then rewrite your channel’ ‘About’ section. Focus as much as possible on the value the viewer will get from your channel. Make sure to drop in a few keywords to ensure your channel can be found by a user searching for those particular keywords.

Do this as a little test. See how many times you write the word you versus how many times you write I or talk about yourself. Remember, this isn't a dating profile. This is for your viewers, subscribers and community. Here’s the vidIQ about page to give you an example:

#4 Update Old Thumbnails and Video Titles

Now might be a great time to revisit some of your old videos with terrible thumbnails and see if you can make any improvements.

But bear in mind you do have to be a little strategic about this. There is an effort versus reward ratio, but you have to find the balance. Don't just go back to all of your old thumbnails and try to improve them.

Look at the videos you think are still relevant and they have performed well in the analytics, for instance for 

 or maybe for audience retention. They may have done well for certain metrics, but they just haven't got the discoverability you think they deserve. For those videos, take a look at the thumbnails and try and improve on them them.

And the same goes for the titles as well. It's also highly likely that you've leveled up your metadata or search engine optimization skills. So take a look at the video descriptions, you can maybe have a look at the tags if you really want to. But again, be selective. Don't try and update everything, tests a couple of videos that you think have a potential to work now, even if you did make them six months, a year, five years ago.

Also consider your info cards and end screens. You may have launched a video a year ago and it didn't do very well for a couple of months and then all of a sudden, it took off, and turned into evergreen content, which is a huge win!

But what you might have forgotten to do is go back to that video and say, hey, this video is getting a lot of views, maybe I could funnel those viewers into more recent content by using more appropriate info cards and end screens.

#6 Make Your Best YouTube Content Even Better!

Personally speaking I always think it's much more difficult to relight the fire in a existing video on YouTube. And I'm always more forward thinking in creating new content. So - create new content from your old content!

A couple of years ago, we made a video on 

 and it did pretty well 145,000 views. But since then the landscape has changed and I, personally speaking, feel I am a better educator and creator.

So we remade this video with new advice, better filmmaking techniques and improved SEO. And now this 

, published in February 2020, sits at the top of a search rankings with nearly 100,000 views in just a single month.

We did the same thing in the gaming topic, too. I made a video a while ago about 

Then Dan, our gaming expert came along and he said, "I can do a better job than that." And I said, yeah, we'll go on then. And he did and it's at the top of the search rankings and will likely get a million views this year.

#7 Reach Out and Connect With Your YouTube Audience

So at the time of writing, we are still deep into the 

, where there are many people stuck at home and they are turning to YouTube for entertainment, education, and in some cases, communication. This is where you as creators can step in.

Now I know that content takes a long time to create. For me it takes days, for others it takes weeks. For animators it can take months but there are ways you as a creator can create rapid fire content, and directly communicate with your audience every single day.

One of the best way to do this is through livestreams. If you've built up a community, you can invite all of those people who are stuck at home right now to join you in a livestream. I guarantee that your viewers will appreciate it.

We know this because we do channel audits every single week on the

The aim isn't necessarily for you to gain Watch Time out of these streams, it's for you to give value to your viewers, whether it's through questions and answers, education, or just entertaining them.

There are a lot of people doing this right now, there are yoga instructors, musicians, fitness coaches who now can't go to their clients or go to their place of work and they're turning to YouTube to do that. If you have enough subscribers, as well as livestreams, you'll also have access to some other cool tools that allow you to keep in touch with your community on a regular basis.

The Community Tab is your YouTube social feed, and a place where you can post pictures, gifs and voting polls. You can tease video footage to go behind the scenes, or in our case celebrate our amazing 500,000 subscribers:

Steve Dotto and I helped run a YouTube meetup in Vancouver, so it felt like a natural fit to help him out. It also exposes me to a brand new audience of potentially 274K subscribers.

However, all of these amazing tutorials were pre-recorded until three months ago. That’s when Jane started going live on YouTube, adding in-the-moment painting tutorials to her video collection. The videos, which range in style from watercolor to acrylic, are compiled in a convenient playlist called “

.” In one such video from that playlist (below), Jane shows more than 29,000 viewers how to paint a forest filled with birch trees, in spring:

Due to the current pandemic, Jane streamed this tutorial at home, away from her studio. Nevertheless, she’s still finding creative ways to make money from her YouTube content. In addition to AdSense revenue, Jane has four more income streams attached to the tutorial above: affiliate links, a video sponsor, a Patreon subscription link, and a link to buy her custom paint brushes. In just one video, that amounts to five money-making opportunities.

All this magic takes place in the description section of Jane’s live-streamed videos. In that area, she shares a link to her website, which is where all of her affiliate links are housed. When customers use those links to purchase art supplies, Jane earns a commission.

Her Patreon is also listed to encourage a more consistent steam of income. When viewers navigate there, they’ll find monthly subscription plans that house exclusive content from Jane: bonus videos, more live paintings, Q&As, viewing parties, and more.

Her last two income streams (brand partnership and product line) may take a while for new creators to achieve. After all, Jane has been on YouTube since 2014 and currently has 261K subscribers. However, it’s a goal worth shooting for, and Jane is proving that fine artists can make money on YouTube too.

Jennifer McGuire Ink: Greeting Card Courses

 is a respected crafting channel that currently has 385K subscribers. Jennifer, who is a stamping enthusiast and crafting instructor, uploads videos about how to make handmade greeting cards.

Jennifer has monetized her channel, so she does earn AdSense revenue from her videos. That certainly helps to expand her income, as she shares tons of free tips and tricks about card making each week. But what if you, as a crafting creator, wanted to make even more money? Viewers can access these courses through a website link in the description of her videos, so it’s a great example of how YouTube promotion can fund outside ventures. In that same section, Jennifer even shares affiliate links to purchase the tools and materials used in her videos.

Crafting doesn’t have to be an unpaid hobby. If you’re great with your hands and have an eye for design, teach others what you know on YouTube.

Bella Coco: Crochet Subscription Boxes Plus Knitted Goods

 uploads crochet tutorials. Her channel of 774K subscribers is filled with step-by-step tutorials on popular stitching patterns, such as the double waffle, the granny square, and the spider stitch.

In one such video (below) Sarah-Jayne focuses on the double waffle technique. Chain by chain, she shows viewers how to stitch the intricate pattern using vibrant, powder blue yarn:

But as we saw with Jennifer McGuire, Sarah-Jayne isn’t just crafting for fun. She’s earning Adsense revenue, plus utilizing four extra income streams to make money on YouTube.

The first is a monthly subscription box of knitting supplies. Scroll down to the description section of her YouTube videos, and you’ll quickly find a link to purchase the box. Each one comes with yarn, a crochet hook, a pattern book, and a special surprise for just £14.99. Not a bad way to expand your money pool as a creator, especially if you can get multiple sign-ups.

All these products and services are promoted via Sarah-Jayne’s YouTube channel. When you create your own crafting channel, you’ll have the same opportunity to monetize your content, then branch off into various money-making ventures.
