During the coronavirus crisis, YouTube has confirmed that health and safety is its number one priority. To ensure that, a lot of its employees will be working away from the office, and the platform is relying a lot more on

But a possible increase in takedowns may not be the only YouTube process to impact creators right now.

Coronavirus & The Impact on YouTube Monetization

Right now, fewer humans are maintaining and running the YouTube platform. Applications to the YouTube Partner Program require a manual review so it’s highly likely this process is going to be affected too.

Usually, if there are no problems with your YouTube channel, the application process takes about a month. But if you're applying for the YouTube Partner Program today, expect it to take significantly longer, as confirmed by YouTube itself:

Of course, there are going to be exceptions to this general statement. Some may find that their channels are still monetized within days. Others may find their channel not being monetized for six months. Unfortunately, in this current climate, we're going to have to accept that these types of things are going to happen.

A question that keeps coming up is if YouTube is sending its workforce home to do their jobs, why can't they do what they usually do if in the office? And that is a good question, and the team at 

, a YouTube channel made by YouTube employees, was on hand to give us a good answer:

"Many of our reviewers are working through outside companies that are working onsite where they're reviewing these videos and sensitive material in onsite locations. Now as those sites have actually been shut down to protect the workers, the workers don't necessarily have all the equipment at home".

In order to address this, YouTube is actually shipping thousands of laptops to those workers in those countries. However, that's not going to work in all circumstances. Keep in mind that there are going to be some types of policies where people won't be able to work on them from home due to the sensitive nature of the content.

Two words come to mind at this point. Patience and understanding. Your application 

YouTube to Creators: Spread the #StayHome Message

Now of course if you are engaging in this new practice we're all becoming familiar with - social distancing - you're probably reading this at home. Which is YouTube's latest initiative to make sure that we're all doing the right thing. Spread the word to stop the spread.

YouTube: Capping Internet Bandwidth in Europe

Of course, since all of those people who are doing the right thing are staying at home right now, a lot of them are going onto the internet and in particular, video, to keep themselves entertained. That means usage of such video platforms as Netflix, Amazon Prime, Facebook, and of course, YouTube, are going through the roof.

And in order to make sure that all of these people watching video don't break the internet, YouTube are capping their bandwidth in Europe. Now what that actually means is that if you are in Europe, you watch a YouTube video, the default quality will be set lower than you may usually expect. That doesn't mean that you can't up the quality if you really need to, but for the majority of people, they're just going to press play and they're going be happy with whatever quality is pushed out to them.

Of course this restriction may be pushed out to the rest of the world, and they may even cap video quality in the future, But going forward, I don’t think creators should change their attitude to uploading videos. If you do want to publish in 4K, make sure you do so, so in months to come, people will be able to watch your videos at the best quality.

Attention all video gaming YouTubers. Google Stadia might be super important for you so let’s take a look at this brand new feature from the platform.

What is Google Stadia? It’s a new type of gaming streaming platform that doesn't require any new technology, and is available on virtually any technology already in your house, whether it be a laptop, a mobile device, even a ChromeCast. This allows you to play triple A games, with super intense graphics, at high resolution, over the internet. Yes, this is Google's answer to Cloud based gaming. Other advantages include no need for a new game controller, although there is one available, and you also can access these games seamlessly.

For example, if you're watching a YouTube video, which has an advert for a video game, you can literally click on the 'Play Now', and start playing that game instantly, and transfer it to another device instantly, starting off from where you left it on the other device.

Is Google Stadia the Future of Video Gaming?

This sounds like the future of video gaming. Now that's quite a bold statement, and it may turn out not to be true. However, if Google Stadia does become a major player in the video game market, you’ll want to be there when it kicks off right? Until now, Stadia was a word more associated with sporting venues. Now it's part of gaming culture, and already YouTube searches are being flooded by everybody giving their opinions on the new gaming platform. It's why a channel with a little over 5,000 subscribers is currently competing with the big boys, ranking number four for this search term.

When we talk about riding the wave of a trend, this is exactly what we mean. This is your very small window of opportunity to establish yourself as an authority on the subject. It's why we're making this video after all. Now by the time you see this video, it may already be too late to give your take on Google Stadia. The window of opportunity may have passed. But you also want to strategize evergreen content.

How to Make YouTube Content Around Google Stadia

For example, one video I can think of right now is 

‘Everything you need to know about Google Stadia before it's released’.

 Then when the service is launched, you want to be the first person to do tutorials around it - 

‘How to use Google Stadia, a beginner's guide.’

 That could sit there for years and years, bringing in views for your channel.

I'm telling you now, the most common questions that are going to be asked about Google Stadia, a Cloud based gaming service, are:

What controllers can I use on Google Stadia?

What games are available on Google Stadia?

I could think up of another 20 ideas all about this product, and it's not even launched yet. In fact, let's do a little bit of a friendly wager here. I bet, by this time next year, somebody is going to have a video with over 100,000 views, that is titled ‘How to use a Playstation 4 controller on Google Stadia’, or words to that effect. If you take one piece of advice away from this video, it is this. If you think Google Stadia is going to be important to you and, most importantly, your audience, start your research, make videos, get your foot in the door. This is your opportunity.

But there's also something else to consider through all of this. Stadia is a Google product, and so is YouTube. Yes, YouTube is integrated into Stadia. Let's start with Crowd Play. This allows a video creator to livestream a game through YouTube and create a lobby, where livestream viewers can actually join the game that is being played. Imagine that, joining ninjas that play Fortnite, or the diamond minecarts who play Minecraft. It's real time YouTube collaboration. In theory, this sounds amazing. In theory of course. We don't know what games will be supported just yet. I can't imagine Minecraft, a Microsoft game, being one of them.

Another feature goes by the name of State Share. This is where a player can reach a certain part in the game, whether it be a big boss or a scary part in a horror game, and then share that state through a link, on YouTube for example, for other gamers to play and experience. To be honest, in the real world, I have no idea how that's going to work, but it sounds exciting. If we step back and look at Stadia as a whole, there are still a lot of unanswered questions. We don't know what games are going to be available for it. We don't know how payment is going to work. Is it per game, or on a subscription based service? And we don't know the release date yet.

Google are going to reconnect with the community in summer, to let us know more about that. But, as a video creator, you have no excuses. You know it's coming, you should be preparing for it. It could be a revolution in the gaming industry.

YouTube to Creators: Spread the Word about Coronavirus

YouTube creators who publish content specifically for children have already suffered a blow from the 

 the platform rolled out in November 2019. Now those same creators face new restrictions from potential legislation aimed at further limiting the reach of the type of content that can be published on the platform.

The Kid’s Internet Design and Safety (KIDS) Act, has been proposed by United States senators Ed Markey and Richard Blumenthal, with the intent to further protect children aged 16 and under who consume online video on social media sites like YouTube, Snapchat, TikTok, and others.

The KIDS Act: How it May Could Children-Focused Video Creation

If the bill is approved, it would mean new laws would come into force for social media platforms to protect children and young teens. Those sites would need to fundamentally change the way they both deliver, and promote video content to children.

Under the new law, auto-play videos, recommendations, and push notifications would have to be turned off for any content that is made for kids.

Senator Ed Markey was the co-author of the COPPA Act but wants to extend the protection afforded to children with further legislation. In a 

"Today, kids’ faces are increasingly covered in the glow of their screens, and it’s time to face the chilling reality that some websites and apps are built in ways that harm children. Powerful companies push kids to buy products at every turn online, and top platforms are saturated with disturbing content that no kid should ever be exposed to."

The KIDS Act wants to push through the following restrictions designed to protect children:

The ban on ‘auto-playing’ videos - a feature that has the potential to reel children and young teenagers into spending an unhealthy amount of time online

The suppression of push alerts and badges that may encourage children to extend the time they spend on their mobile devices

The bill limits sites from promoting inappropriate, violent, or dangerous content, and will require those sites to set up a feedback system for reporting that content

Banning sites from pushing content around influencer marketing or marketing that includes “embedded interactive elements”

Stopping websites for promoting alcohol or nicotine products to those aged under 16 years of age

One of the stand-out restrictions in the proposed bill calls out unboxing videos in particular. As one of the most popular trends on YouTube, this content has long encouraged the partnership between creators and brands or influencers.

Unboxing videos, like this one below from the SquirrelStampede YouTube channel, are often sponsored, thereby exposing children to a certain toy or confectionery brand under the guise of entertainment.

The KIDS Act isn’t proposing the banning of unboxing videos - because good luck with that - but would prohibit platforms like YouTube from recommending this content to children. It would also make it illegal for social media platforms to recommend any sponsored content to children, impacting an already fragile eco-system, and further limiting the exposure unboxing creators would get on the platform.

The KIDS Act would also make it illegal for platforms to recommend literally any kind of branded or sponsored content to users under the age of 16.

The after effects of COPPA on YouTube creators who publish children’s content has been significant, and the KIDS Act has the very real potential of limiting their visibility to a critical extent. With restrictions on children’s content being recommended, the number of views and Watch Time a kid’s focused YouTube channel will be severely impacted.

After the impact of COPPA, YouTube creators who publish content for children face new limitations from the proposed KIDS Act.

YouTube Children’s Content Creators Face New Woes from KIDS Act

 T-Series is now two million subscribers ahead of PewDiePie, and are well on the way to 100 million subscribers. As of time of this recording, they collectively have 193 million subscribers. Which puts them population wise, almost on the par with the African country of Nigeria. The trouble with these stats is that they go out of date very, very quickly. So if we were to look back on the PewDiePie vs. T-Series subscribers ranks. Where would we start and where would we finish? Let’s take a look.

 It’s only fair to use FlareTV as a starting point. Their 24/7 streamer live sub count was the first and is still running today. They first started their stream, way back on the first of September 2018. As for when the race finished. Well you could either pick the last date, PewDiePie was in the lead or, the date on which he officially ended the campaign with his video. Which was on April 28th and that's the one we're going to go with. And how many days are there between the, first of September 2018 and the 28th of April 2019? I'm glad you asked - its 239. And when you have some fixed dates to use as reference points, you can start to have fun with the data.

 For example on September the first 2018, PewDiePie has 65.76 million subscribers. 239 days later, he had 95.05 million subscribers. An increase of 29.29 million subscribers.

 As for T-Series, back on 1st of September, they still had some chasing to do as they were on 60.07 million subscribers. But by the end they were on, 96.27 million subscribers, which was an increase of 36.13 million subscribers. In those 239 days.

 And if you have a set number of days, then you know we total the number of subscribers gained in that time. What you can work out next, is the average number of subscribers per day. PewDiePie gained 123K subscribers per day. T-Series 147K subscribers per day. Whatever way you look at it, the numbers are already astronomical. And we haven't even started yet. Because you see, everybody's been focused on the subscriber rate between PewDiePie and T-Series. But what do all of the subscribers do? They click on videos and watch them. So what about the views.

 Well forget the millions, now the numbers are moving into the billions. PewDiePie's channel started this race on 18.64 billion views and by the of it he had 21.27 billion views. An increase of 2.63 billion views. That's the equivalent of one in every three people on the entire planet watching one of PewDiePie's videos.

 And if you thought that was impressive, you haven’t seen anything yet. T-Series already had 46.89 billion views, before this race started. And now they have 68.92 billion views - an increase of 22.03 billion views. That's more views than PewDiePie's entire channel, in 239 days.

 When you boil down those numbers into averages, PewDiePie's channel earned 11 million views a day. While T-Series brought in an astronomical 92.2 million views a day. Now if my maths are right, that works out at 3.8M views an hour or 1056 views per second.

 Let’s take a look at the record-breaking days. PewDiePie's best subscriber day of the whole race, was December 1st 2018, when he gained 544 thousand subscribers. His best viewing day was on April 1st, when the channel brought 25 million views and 308K subscribers.

 For T-Series, well their best day was also December 1st 2018 with 326K subscribers. They're best viewing day was April 18th with 122 million views, and 176 thousand subscribers.

 As for record-breaking videos, we can't avoid PewDiePie's, two diss-tracks on the subscriber race. Which to date, have collectively brought in, over 200 million views. These two videos are now PewDiePie's, most popular videos on his entire channel.

 As you might expect, T-Series never directly address the subscriber race with a song. Their most popular video during the race, was 

 with over half a billion views. But it is by no means the popular video on their entire channel.

 2017 days - the combined total of time, PewDiePie has spent as the most subscribed channel on YouTube.

 April the 14th 2019 - the day T-Series, took the crown and, they have remained there ever since.

 Since we know the total number of days, that gives us the total number of subscribers and views for both channels during this race. What conversion rate does that give us for, views per subscribers? Or what I like to call VPS. PewDiePie gained a new subscriber for every 89. 7 views. While it took T-Series, 654.2 views for every subscriber they earned.

It’s been quite a rollercoaster race on YouTube between PewDiePie and T Series over the past few months. Let’s take a look at 15 numbers that defined the story.

PewDiePie Vs T Series: 15 Numbers That Tell The Story

If you are new to vidIQ then you are in for a visual treat in the above video because this is the countdown between T-Series and the only channel left standing in their way to being the most subscribed to channel on YouTube. That channel is YouTube Music which isn't really a channel in the traditional sense since it has no videos of its own and was automatically generated by YouTube's video discovery system.

But since T-Series overtook PewDiePie back in April, YouTube Music has been the excuse many have been using to say T-Series isn't the largest YouTube channel. But with a subscriber count of 14,000 subscribers per day versus 104,000 subscribers per day, it was only a matter of time before T-Series put this argument to bed as well. Now for some interesting nuggets of data:

1. The T-Series channel was created on March 13th, 2006, therefore taking T-Series 13 years, four months, 22 days or 4,892 days or 117,408 hours to become the most subscribed to channel on YouTube.

2. If we do a little rounding of the numbers that equates to 22,000 subscribers per day over the course of the channel's life.

3. But of course the numbers are never quite as smooth as that. T-Series started on 78 million subscribers in 2019 and have gained over 29 million subscribers this year already. Basically a third of their entire channel size.

4. And since we've just started week 32 of 2019 that basically works out at almost a million subscribers per week.

5. Now this number will be out of date almost the second I record it, but at the time of takeover T-Series had 13,684 videos on their channel. That works out at roughly 7,845 subscribers per video.

But with all that being said it is game time. Here we are Sunday, August 4th, in all the important time zones, which ties a neat little bow around this event. So let's slow things down to real-time so we can record and document the exact moment T-Series became the most subscribed to channel on YouTube. Now that's pretty cool, we managed to capture the exact moment the two channels were neck and neck. And let's restart it again. And there we have it folks. The date and time T-Series took the crown of both the most watched and most subscribed to channel on YouTube. Because, just in case you didn't know, T-Series also have over 78 billion video views.

And as we have always said throughout these explorations into the data behind the biggest channels on YouTube we take no sides. This is a celebration of the video platform that has revolutionized the way the globe communicates. And the power it has given to almost any person in the world to reach almost every person in the world. Whether that be the largest music label in Asia, or indeed a solo Swedish gamer. (exploding Yep, don't worry, don't worry, we haven't forgotten about him. We're just wondering if he's gonna make it to 100 million subscribers in time before YouTube switch off these real-time subscriber counts.

It is now finally official and undisputed. T Series is the most subscribed to channel on YouTube and this is exactly when they finally did it.

Even if your video has nothing to do with the 

, your content still may be demonetized. Worse still, it may even slow down your application into the YouTube Partner Program, so you can't monetize your channel at all.

, YouTube has informed us that to reduce the risk of coronavirus, they are reducing in-office staffing, to quite rightly prioritize the health and safety of their employees. Creators who log in to their account are also seeing this announcement:

The knock-on effect of this for creators is that YouTube will now be relying much more on machine learning to detect potentially harmful content on the platform.

To be clear, this is not just about coronavirus or COVID-19 content. This is all of the other potentially harmful and dangerous content that's pushed onto YouTube every single day and YouTube has comprehensive guidelines for.

What Increased YouTube Automation Means For a Creator

Now there are very few human reviewers looking at this content, and YouTube is relying on AI and machine learning. As a result, what you can expect to see, as creators, is an increase in video removals, even if, ultimately, they don't violate community guidelines.

Why? Because basically, machine learning sometimes gets it wrong, as we well know. Because of this expected increase in errors, YouTube won't issue strikes unless they have a high confidence that the video does actually violate guidelines.

And YouTube does already have an appeal system in place which you can still use but because the human workforce is less likely to be in the YouTube offices right now, you can expect delays in those appeals being reviewed.

Because of this, YouTube will be more cautious about the content they promote. Live streams and unreviewed content may not be searchable, or discoverable on the homepage or through recommendations.

The Impact on YouTube’s Partner Program

So, we know there are fewer people working at YouTube offices and that's completely understandable. Everybody, at this time, needs to be safe, and stay healthy.

YouTube has talked about how video content is going to be impacted on the platform. But what they didn't mention is the YouTube Partner Program. And I think that's going to be under similar constraints because human reviewers do look into each and every channel that they allow into that.

So if you have applied for the YouTube Partner Program or monetization in the last four to six weeks, don't be surprised if there is a significant delay. And folks, we have to accept that.

YouTube has set up a dedicated update page on the 

, which is being updated on a daily basis. So as well as the stories we've covered today, they are also closing their YouTube Space facilities temporarily and will be allowing creators to actually monetize a coronavirus and COVID-19 content. We'll have more on that in the near future.

As of right now, you may have noticed that if you do try and monetize content that even includes a passing mention of the coronavirus, you will almost certainly get the yellow dollar icon. As well as daily updates, the dedicated support page has a lot more information, including FAQs on monetization around coronavirus, and COVID-19.

YouTube Warns Takedowns May Increase During Coronavirus Crisis

 which cover a multitude of sins video creators might break be it nudity, harmful, hateful, violent content, harassment and bullying, or spam. Creators can quickly find themselves in trouble if they cross the line on any of these topics.

There are many different Community Guidelines and also a number of places where creators can break them such as:

In the past, the punishment from YouTube differed depending on where the crime was committed. It might be that you lose livestream privileges or that you couldn't post videos for a certain length of time. The rules were somewhat chaotic, so YouTube have cleared up the confusion for creators and made it crystal clear what violates a Community Guideline (

 we’re covering Community Guidelines in the post and not copyright strikes which is a whole different topic and one we’ll be covering soon).

YouTube Community Guidelines February 2019

As of February 19th 2019, the new Community Guidelines are in place for all creators on the platform. YouTube are keen not to punish first time offenders who may not be up to speed with the rules, and as a result, all channels will receive a one-time warning the first time they post content that crosses the line with no penalties to their channel except for the removal of that content. The good news is that this one time warning applies to all channels so even if you do have an existing strike you still get this warning before further penalties. It doesn't matter where you break the Community Guideline whether it be on a thumbnail, video content, playlists, or via the comments - the penalty is always going to be the same.

 The second time you break Community Guidelines will be considered your first official strike. That will result in your content being removed as before. On top of this all your YouTube content posting privileges will be frozen for one week. This includes videos, live-streams, YouTube stories, and community posts. However, you’ll still be able to post comments. After a week you will get all of the posting features back but the strike remains on your account for 90 days in total.

 If you commit another Community Guideline violation within a 90 day period this is your second strike with the same penalties applied except that instead of a one week ban you get a two week ban on publishing content.

 If you fall foul of the Community Guidelines for a third time, YouTube isn’t here to play. Your channel will be terminated!

Obviously the termination of your channel is pretty drastic so YouTube have now promised to be more transparent about the guideline you violated so it doesn’t get to that stage. They will be more specific with information about that violation, communicate it to you through notifications and emails and via the Creative Studio. There will also be an appeals process in place as before.

We applaud all of the changes that YouTube are making here. I think that the first time warning is a fantastic idea because many video creators get terrified over making any strike at any point in their YouTube journey. I think a consistent penalty system makes it very clear to the user. It also eliminates the extremely harsh 90 day livestream penalty there used to be.

In effect, creators are getting an extra strike out of the new rules but you shouldn’t take advantage of that. After your first warning you shouldn't be making any further strikes on your YouTube channel.

And according to our joint research with Omnicom, relating to a passion is three times more important than whether or not there’s a big Hollywood name attached.”
