If you've been an active consumer of YouTube video, How many comments do you think you’ve posted over a lifetime? Is it a whopping number like 7,000 or just a handful?

If your number is closer to, or exceeds 7,000, being able to review and delete your comments is important. We live in a fast-paced world, which means your opinions won’t always age well online. They can sound offensive, off-topic, or downright cringey when you re-read them several weeks later.

Luckily, there’s a simple way to take inventory of the comments you post. To view and delete your riskier discussions, let’s dive into a step-by-step tutorial.

How to View the Comments You’ve Posted on YouTube

Go to the YouTube homepage and find the left-hand navigation menu. Click ‘History’.

On the right side of this screen, you’ll see a panel called History Type. Select the ‘Comments’ option.

The next thing you’ll see is a collection of comments you’ve posted on YouTube. These will be in chronological order, starting with your most recent comments. If you see any cringey ones, hover over the comment to reveal three circles. Click that icon, and the option to either edit or delete the comment will appear.

Now that we’ve taken care of these comments, let’s review the ones in your live streams. To do this, return to the History Type panel and switch your selection from ‘Comments’ to ‘Live Chat’. Now you can cycle through any live stream chat messages you’ve posted.

Three Drawbacks of Using YouTube’s Comment Review Tool

On the surface, this tool for viewing past comments is very useful. In the most basic sense, it does what it promises and allows you to review and delete comments. But here’s the catch (and it’s a pretty big one): If you want to do any of this with ease or speed, you’re out of luck as this tool is slightly unfinished.

First of all, there are no filters or search parameters to narrow your results. All you can do is scroll the comments in chronological order until the page has to dynamically load, which takes forever.

Secondly, this YouTube tool doesn’t display all the comments you’ve posted. I know this because we at vidIQ reply to hundreds of comments every time we post new videos. It feels like this tool only collects the comments we post from a YouTube watch page and not all the comments we reply to within the YouTube Studio.

Lastly, the comments displayed by this tool don’t have channel icons or thumbnail images next to them. It’s a small thing to overlook, but their absence makes a huge difference in the user experience.

I say all that to say this: If your goal is to dig through years of YouTube comments to find your most embarrassing ones, the task won’t be easy or efficient.

Oddly enough, this presents a legitimate question: Why would I tell you about a tool that’s not very useful? Well, it’s better than nothing of course. But the other reason is that it opens the door to a powerful tool you shouldn’t ignore.

The Gateway to Managing Your Privacy on YouTube

YouTube’s comment review tool might be unfinished, but the Watch History tool in the same panel feels pretty complete. With this tool, you can review the videos you’ve watched and decide whether to erase that history. It’s a great way to manage your data and privacy on YouTube.

Furthermore, if you want to review and delete activity that Google tracks as a whole, this is where you can start to fix all of that (when you use Google services).

How to View Any Comment You've Ever Posted On YouTube

Admittedly your options are very limited but here’s the steps you need to follow if you’ve downloaded the Creator Studio app on either iOS or Android,

Tap the menu in the top left-hand corner and go to ‘Videos’

Find the video you want to amend and tap into it

Then tap the pencil icon at the top and then swipe over to the ‘Advanced Settings’ tab

Swipe down until you see the comments option, which allows you to toggle on or off comments for this video on your channel

Note that it doesn't delete any existing comments from the video and you will be able to see them once again, if you reenable comments for that video. Watch our tutorial for more details:

YouTube Comment Management From a Mobile Phone

When it comes to disabling comments for your YouTube videos, there are not many options when it comes to using a mobile phone. For instance, if you want to bulk disable comments on videos or do it they upload default so every video you upload in the future has comments disabled you'll have to do all of that from a desktop, but we do have a 

If you don't want to completely disable comments for a video, there are some limited comment management options in the Creator Studio app.

Just tap on the menu in the app and go to comments. Next to each comment tap the three dots, which brings up the option to:

Hide the user so you NEVER see comments from them again

But to really get into the nitty-gritty of comment moderation, you'll need to do it on a computer. If your 

, then you have no choice - comments will be disabled for your videos automatically.

And finally, if you do disable comments, you're effectively killing your ability to directly connect with your audience.

I'm not saying that more comments mean more views, but if you can personally connect with somebody on the other end of the lens, they're going to feel more connected to you as a creator, trust you more, subscribe to you and watch more of your content.

Have you ever needed to disable comments on one of your YouTube videos, but you only had a mobile phone at hand. We show you how.

How to Enable or Disable YouTube Comments on a Mobile Device

Nobody likes nor wants to read sub4sub comments so here is how to block them from your channel.

Click on your YouTube profile picture in the top right hand corner of your screen

Click on ‘Settings’ in the left hand column

On the screen that pops up click on ‘Community’

You’ll see a screen that shows your channel moderators, people you've hidden from your channel, and a section at the bottom called ‘Blocked Words’

Add the list of keywords you want to block here

The Blocked words box works very much like video tags. You type in a word or phrase, press enter, and that will create the blocked word. You can use spaces as well to write complete phrases, such as, "Subscribe to me." You can remove blocked words by either clicking on the cross next to the phrase or by pressing the backspace key.

You can also automatically place comments with sub4sub content, or other hashtags and links in them to be held for review. To view and review these comments, go to the ‘Comments’ page in the Creative Studio and you will see three tabs at the top.

 is YouTube's automated attempt to filter out comments such as, "Sub 4 sub?" Which sometimes it gets right, while other times it filters out completely legitimate comments.

 is where you will find those comments that have been weeded out from your blocked words list. Oh, and if you're wondering why some of our comments are blurred out, it's because they contain foul and abusive language, so feel free to add such words and phrases to your blocked list too.

You have several options on how you can deal with these comments, you can:

Permanently hide the user from your channel, so you never see any of their comments again

This, however, is an enormous mistake! Engagement (and especially commenting) is factored heavily in whether your video appears in YouTube Search and Related Videos – if you block YouTube comments you will limit the viral potential of your video and cripple your SEO. In fact, there’s a direct correlation between videos that receive engagement from the owner of the video and views, as well as whether that video is likely to receive additional engagement in the future.

Probably the most obvious lesson that the owners of Amy’s Baking Company chose to ignore is the old Internet adage “don’t feed the trolls!” Ignoring a troll is a troll’s kryptonite – as a YouTube creator you should always err on taking the high road and staying out of a good ol’ fashioned flame war. Instead, focus your efforts on the commenters that matter. Identify influential viewers by looking into which commenters have the highest number of subscribers, and then respond to those users. These “influencers” are your most important viewers, and unlike trolls (who usually don’t have many subscribers) are actually worth your time! Many partnerships and cross promotional agreements between channels have been forged within the YouTube comments section, resulting in thousands or even millions of views.

Instead of responding negatively to your audience, if you’re going to respond at all try being positive! A perfect example of this in practice can be found in the video Low Calorie Chicken Wraps Recipe by the culinary masters over at Being Fat Sucks. In a previous video, a viewer commented that one of the hosts had an uncanny resemblance to our good friend Severus Snape from Harry Potter. The comment snowballed into a frenzy, and every video with the Snape-ish looking host was spammed with YouTube comments about his appearance. Rather than responding negatively, the creators acknowledged their audience by having the host dress up as Snape in their next video. And guess what, their audience loved it!

Believe it or not, YouTube is a social network. In fact, it’s now the 3rd largest in the world (behind Facebook and Google+)! Adopting Social Media Best Practices will go a long way in setting the tone for your YouTube comments and creating an amazing community around your content. By rewarding constructive commenters with thoughtful responses you’ll create an environment that fosters positivity rather than thrives off the negativity that trolls love. Home Depot is a great example of a company that has done this extremely well. In the example below, a viewer expressed his frustration that Home Depot didn’t provide a link to the second part of the video. Home Depot acknowledged the commenter and replied immediately, currying the favor of their audience and increasing engagement.
